SEAFOOD DIRECTIONS

TACKLING THE SEAFOOD INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

The biennial Seafood Directions 2019 conference was held 9th-11th October in Melbourne. Over two days the event bought together more than 400 primary producers, transporters, retailers, educators, policymakers, innovators, fish and chip shop owners, restauranteurs and chefs who work together to put Australian seafood on our plates.

Tackling four topics, Sustainability, Plastics, Value and Industry. Blue-X designed and facilitated four interactive workshops. Over 150 delegates worked together during these sessions, uncovering some of the most pressing problems that the seafood industry faces.

Our work on this project continues, we have promised to analyse these problems, produce a systems map and share it back to the industry. We are also exploring how we can begin working on solving these problems.

FOUR CHALLENGES THAT SEAFOOD DIRECTIONS IS FOCUSED ON TACKLING

1. SUSTAINABILITY

We have a complex challenge, balancing the need to drive profitability, whilst respecting the environment, alongside supporting the people in our community who rely on the seafood industry. Alongside ever-changing consumer demands.

2. VALUE

There is huge latent potential in capturing the true value of fresh, local, sustainably harvested Australian seafood. New innovations in technology, value-adding, management, distribution, trading and traceability are needed.

3. PLASTICS

Every year around 8 million metric tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean with an estimated 2/3 of the world’s fish stocks suffering from plastic ingestion.

4. INDUSTRY

There is a shortage of young talent in the industry and a need for a new and safer way of working.
